December 13

Revelation 12:3-5 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. (NKJV)

This is a weird Christmas story. Instead of shepherds and wise men, there’s a dragon trying to eat a baby and stars being thrown to the earth and rods of iron. What?!

This is the supernatural side of Christmas. God looks at earth and realizes it is being held hostage by the great dragon, the devil. So He invades. He parachutes into enemy territory as a baby to rescue us. It’s like the D-Day invasion! And when He parachutes in, the great dragon, Satan, attacked like the Nazis in an effort to destroy Jesus. Satan influences King Herod to kill all the baby boys in Bethlehem to try and stop Christ’s advance. But the devil loses!

Jesus was caught up to heaven and to the throne of God. He will rule with an iron scepter, and there is nothing the devil can do about it.

Jesus wins. Evil loses.

Though it looked like the dragon was going to triumph, he was defeated at the cross. Though it looked like Satan was winning, his defeat was sealed when Jesus rose again and was caught up to heaven.

What does this mean for us? So much!

Heaven invaded earth to rescue you. You were held captive by sin, but Jesus’ birth was the first battle to bring you freedom. His mission and sacrifice won the battle for you.

Just as we say thank you to our military veterans for defending our freedom, remember to thank the ultimate Veteran and tell Him you are grateful He won the battle for your freedom.

Write down a prayer of thanksgiving and tell Jesus thank you for invading earth for you.
